Text & Captions

Add text elements and AI-powered captions to annotate and enhance your recordings.

Text Overlays

Create text overlays that appear at specific points in your timeline. Text overlays are great for titles, callouts, annotations, step numbers, and any on-screen information.

Adding Text

Click the text lane on the timeline to add a new text segment, then select it to edit it in the Text tab. Each text segment has a start and end time on the timeline, controlling when it appears and disappears.

Text Styling

Customize your text overlays in the Text tab:

  • Content — Full text editing with multiline support
  • Font family — Choose from built-in fonts or system fonts
  • Font size — Dynamically calculated based on video resolution (12–256px)
  • Font weight — Normal or bold
  • Text color — Any hex color
  • Text alignment — Left, center, or right

Background

Add a background behind your text for better readability:

  • Background color — Any color
  • Background padding — 0–32px
  • Border radius — 0–32px for rounded corners

Position

Use the 9-point layout picker to place text in any position:

Top LeftTop CenterTop Right
Middle LeftMiddle CenterMiddle Right
Bottom LeftBottom CenterBottom Right

Transitions

Animate how text appears and disappears:

  • Entry animation — None, Fade, Slide Up, Slide Down, or Scale
  • Exit animation — Chosen independently from the entry animation
  • Duration — One transition duration from 0.1s to 1.0s

Batch Editing

Select multiple text segments to apply the same style (font, color, size, background) to all of them at once.

AI Captions (Speech-to-Text)

Recorded integrates Whisper speech-to-text to automatically generate captions from your microphone audio. Transcription runs locally on your computer, and the spoken language is detected automatically. Captions require a recording made with the microphone enabled.

Generating Captions

  1. Open the Caption tab in the editor
  2. Choose an AI model:
    • Fast — Quicker processing, good accuracy for clear speech
    • Accurate — Slower processing, better accuracy for complex audio
  3. If the model isn’t installed yet, it is downloaded the first time you use it (this only needs to be done once)
  4. Click Generate Captions — Recorded analyzes your microphone audio and creates time-mapped caption segments

Editing Captions

After generation, review the captions before applying them:

  • Fix any transcription errors by editing the text
  • Delete unnecessary segments

Captions that fall inside sections you’ve deleted from the timeline are excluded automatically.

Applying Captions

Once you’re satisfied, click Add Captions to Video. Choose Replace to remove existing text and apply the captions, or Add to keep your existing text. The captions become text segments on the timeline, synchronized with your speech, and you can restyle or retime them like any other text segment.
