Export Resolution & Quality
Recorded keeps export settings simple: there are no platform presets or manual bitrate fields. You choose a format, a resolution, and (for GIF) a frame rate — Recorded handles the encoder settings automatically.
Resolution Options
MP4
| Resolution | Notes |
|---|---|
| 720p | Compact files, good for quick web sharing |
| 1080p | Full HD — the default for MP4 |
| 1440p | Sharper detail for high-density displays |
| 4K | Maximum clarity for large screens |
| Original | The recording’s own resolution |
| Retina | The full physical-pixel resolution of a high-DPI (e.g., Retina) capture — shown only when the recording has one |
GIF
| Resolution | Notes |
|---|---|
| 480p | Smallest files |
| 720p | The default for GIF |
| Original | The recording’s own resolution |
| Retina | Shown only for high-DPI captures |
Resolution presets set the short side of the video (for example, 1080p means 1080 pixels on the short side), so non-16:9 canvases such as 9:16 or 1:1 keep their aspect ratio. The exact output size is shown next to the Resolution label in the export dialog.
Very large outputs are scaled down proportionally to fit H.264 limits (at most 4096 pixels on the longest side).
Frame Rate
- MP4 always exports at 60 FPS. The editor renders zoom, cursor, and transition animations at 60 FPS for smooth motion, even for Windows recordings, which are captured at 30 FPS (macOS captures at 60 FPS).
- GIF lets you choose 10, 15 (default), or 24 FPS. Lower frame rates produce much smaller files.
Optimize File Size
For MP4 exports, turn on Optimize File Size to create an additional compressed copy of the video alongside the original. The original export is always kept, so you can compare the two and share whichever fits your needs.
Estimated Size and Time
The export dialog shows an Estimated Size and Estimated Time for the current settings. File size grows with resolution and duration (and, for GIF, with frame rate). For long GIFs, consider trimming the clip, lowering the resolution, or using MP4 instead.
Tips
- 1080p is the best default for most platforms.
- Use Original or Retina when you want the sharpest text in UI walkthroughs.
- Use 480p at 10–15 FPS for GIFs that need to stay small, such as README files or chat messages.
