FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Recorded.
Is Recorded free?
Yes. Recorded is free to download, and you can record and edit without an account. On the free plan, exports shorter than 25 seconds are free and include a small “by recorded.app” watermark plus a short Recorded outro. Exporting a video that is 25 seconds or longer requires signing in with a Pro license. Every editing feature — auto zoom, cursor effects, backgrounds, webcam overlay, text, AI captions, speed control, motion blur, and background music — is available on both plans. Pro removes the 25-second limit, the watermark, and the outro, and raises the monthly share-link quota.
What platforms are supported?
Recorded is a native desktop app for macOS and Windows. On macOS it requires macOS 12 (Monterey) or later on an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer); there is no Intel Mac build yet. On Windows it requires Windows 10 (version 1903 or later) or Windows 11 on a 64-bit x64 PC; ARM64 Windows is not yet supported. There is no Linux, web, or mobile version.
Where are my recordings saved?
By default, recordings are saved to:
- macOS:
~/Movies/Recorded/Recordings/ - Windows:
Videos\Recorded\Recordings\
Each recording is stored in its own folder, named with the date, time, and captured window name. The folder contains the video file, audio tracks, metadata, and editor project data. Exported videos are saved wherever you choose in the save dialog.
Can I record system audio?
Yes, with no virtual audio driver needed. On macOS, Recorded captures system audio through Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit, which requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later and the Screen Recording permission. On Windows, it uses WASAPI loopback, so no “Stereo Mix” device or extra setup is required. Microphone and system audio can be recorded at the same time as separate tracks, so you can adjust their volumes independently in the editor.
What export formats are available?
Recorded exports MP4 and GIF. MP4 uses H.264 video with AAC audio at 60 FPS, in 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K, or the recording’s original resolution. GIF is silent and can be exported at 480p, 720p, or original resolution at 10, 15, or 24 FPS. Recorded does not export MOV/ProRes, WebM, or H.265 (HEVC).
Does Recorded support hardware acceleration?
Yes. Recorded encodes H.264 with your computer’s hardware encoder whenever possible and falls back to software encoding automatically. On macOS it uses Apple VideoToolbox. On Windows, recording tries NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, and AMD AMF in that order, and export uses your GPU’s hardware encoder when the driver provides one.
Can I add captions to my recordings?
Yes. Recorded generates captions from your microphone audio with Whisper speech-to-text, running entirely on your computer. Choose the Fast or Accurate model (downloaded once on first use), generate captions, review them, and add them to the timeline as styled text you can edit. You can also add your own text overlays manually.
How many languages does Recorded support?
The Recorded app is available in 14 languages: English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. You can switch languages at any time in Settings without restarting.
Can I use Recorded on multiple devices?
Yes. Your Pro license is tied to your Recorded account, so you can sign in on another computer to use it there. A license can have a device limit; you can see your license details under Settings > Account & License. If you reach the limit, remove a device you no longer use — purchased licenses are managed from your LemonSqueezy order page, and coupon licenses directly in the app.
How do I report a bug?
Use Settings > Contact Us in the app (sign-in required) to send a message to the support team. You can optionally attach a screenshot to help explain the issue. If you can’t sign in or launch the app, email us at support@recorded.app.
