Interface Overview

Recorded’s interface is designed to be simple yet powerful. This guide covers the main areas you’ll interact with.

Main Window

The main window is your starting point. It contains:

Capture Mode Selector

Three capture mode buttons:

  • Monitor — Select which display to record
  • Window — Pick a specific application window
  • Area — Draw a custom recording region

Choosing a mode opens a picker overlay where you select the target and click Start Recording.

Device Controls

Below the capture modes, you’ll find controls for:

  • Microphone — Select and enable/disable your mic input
  • System Audio — Toggle system sound capture
  • Webcam — Select a camera to include a face cam, with a live preview

Buttons at the bottom of the main window open the Library and Settings windows. When an update is available, an Update Available button also appears in the main window.

Recording Control Panel

While recording, a compact floating panel appears with:

  • Recording indicator — An animated pulsing red dot with “REC” text
  • Timer — Shows elapsed recording time in MM:SS format
  • Webcam preview — Live camera feed (when webcam is enabled)
  • Audio waveforms — Visual indicators for microphone and system audio levels
  • Stop — End the recording and open the editor
  • Cancel — Discard the current recording and delete all files

The control panel is draggable so you can move it out of the way. It also becomes semi-transparent when unfocused to avoid obstructing your screen.

Editor

After recording, the editor opens automatically with these sections:

Timeline

The timeline at the bottom shows your recording with:

  • Playback controls — Play and pause, or click anywhere on the timeline to scrub
  • Trim handles — Drag to trim the start and end
  • Segment management — Split segments at the playhead with C, delete with Delete
  • Zoom and text lanes — Zoom segments and text overlays on their own lanes; click an empty spot to add one
  • Audio waveforms — System audio and microphone waveforms displayed inside the video segments

Editing Tabs

The right panel contains editing controls organized in tabs:

  • Background — Choose wallpapers, gradients, solid colors, or your own image. Set the canvas aspect ratio (Auto, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 1:1, 4:5) and adjust padding, corner radius, blur, and shadow.
  • Cursor — Customize cursor size (12–256px), choose presets, adjust smoothing, and configure click animations and sounds.
  • Crop — Crop the recording (Free, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, or 1:1).
  • Caption — Generate AI captions from microphone audio using Whisper speech-to-text, running locally.
  • Music — Add background music from preset tracks with volume control.
